Chapter 6 Part 2 - Revised

Skye was struck stupid. “What do you mean it’s humming?” She asked and Savannah shrugged as she sat on her knees but didn’t get off of the counter.

“It’s kind of like a song but I don’t know what the song is!” Savannah tilted her head towards the sound only she seemed to hear and thought for a moment, “I don’t know, but it reminds me of daddy.” The sadness in her voice was nearly broke Skye’s heart. When was she going to stop looking at her family and feeling the sadness? She just wanted it all to stop and be some form of normal. She looked up at the box and remembered the envelope that Gertie had given her with instructions on the statues care and then promptly and completely forgot where she had left it.  Not that it was important right this second but she reminded herself to look for it later. It was probably still in the back pocket of her jeans. She remembered putting them back on when she went to get Cyrus from the Police station but couldn’t remember if it was still there. Not important she thought at herself again. Where was her brain these days?

She walked over to the cabinet, “Sav get off the counter.” She said calmly and Cyrus stepped up to help his little sister down. As she reached up to get the box she felt like the envelope was actually very important right now. She felt an imaginary shove in the chest to get her moving as she put the box on the counter. “I’ll be right back.” Skye took off in a half jog through the house, up the stairs taking them two at a time in a lazy mad dash to her room. She grabbed the railing at the top and turned to sprint the last few feet when she almost knocked over Kyra who was coming from the bathroom rubbing her eyes.

Right before she mowed the poor kid over. “Oh baby! I didn’t see you, I’m sorry!” Kyra shrugged and continued to head downstairs. Skye watched her go almost all the way down wondering what happened to her little girl and how she could get her back before she remembered that she had to stop looking at them like that and have faith that things would be ok. Her body jumped involuntarily and she remembered that she was looking for something she needed like right now and continued to her room.

Skye picked up her pants and quickly checked the back pockets but the envelope wasn’t there. “I remember having it last night.” She mumbled to herself as she picked up everything off of the floor, her pants, her shirt, and her bra, that stupid jacket she was wearing and threw them in all directions. Kona came loping into the room and seeing his owner doing something he couldn’t understand he stood by the bed, lowered himself down on his front paws and forced his huge body underneath it. The only place he liked to sleep when he didn’t want to be disturbed.

She watched him wedge himself underneath it and almost shrugged it off and then wondered. “Hmmmm…”

She knelt down and peered under the bed. It was relatively clean except for a few shoe boxes filled with receipts, cards, old pictures and negatives from before the digital age were stored, well…that and  the massive amount of fur from Kona sleeping there all of the time. Just looking at it all made her nose itch. She was about to get out and look somewhere else when from underneath Kona’s massive paw, right where he was resting his head, she saw the corner of an envelope and held her breath completely giddy with excitement.
It was a bit of a struggle with him for a minute because he wouldn’t lift his head for her to grab the envelope and she was pretty sure that he purposely put more pressure on it just to make it difficult. After some awkward positioning she wiggled it away from him anyway. Still half under the bed she tore the envelope open and unfolded the paper.

All that was written on it were three symbols with wording and dates in another language written underneath each one. Symbols she couldn’t read or even begin to understand. Her heart sunk “Ok, what the hell does this mean? Instructions my ass, how do I figure this out now?”

She looked at the symbols again and shook her head as she put the paper back in the envelope and dropped it on her dresser. Looking at herself in the mirror over the dresser she thought that this was one of the hardest and strangest 24 hours she had gone through in a while. She still had so much to figure out so they could keep the business and their home. There was no more waiting, she digested everything that happened at the bank and the flea market and was hoping that this statue thing could bring in enough to help them hold off the bank. Without knowing what the instructions were though had put her at a disadvantage because something with paperwork to verify it was always worth more. Not understanding that paperwork was going to be a bit of an obstacle but she was determined to figure it out.

Kyra was standing in the doorway to her mother's room watching her. She silently crossed the room and wrapped her arms around her mother. Skye jumped and as soon as she was touched and realized it was Kyra. At once she enfolded her as completely as she could and kissed her on the top of her head. Instantly she felt Kyra relax into her and her heart rose.

Unknown to Skye was that Kyra took the paper with the symbols off of the dresser.
