Chapter 12 Part 1

After Skye had her second cup of coffee well under way she felt somewhere near normal. Not as normal as she would have liked but she felt like the alcohol had finally stopped wreaking havoc on her system. She sat at the large kitchen table and sipped her coffee as she watched Savannah and Kyra put their lunches together while they got themselves ready for school. She watched Kyra work silently as she put two peanut butter and jam sandwiches, the last of the snacks into each bag and closed them up then handing one of the bags to Savannah so she could put in her backpack. Content and just as Skye’s mind was shifting back to her conversation with Dominic, Savannah snapped her out of it.

“Mommy…?” Savannah asked shrilly “Is Cy taking me to school today? He’s not ready yet.” It was almost like she knew that something was going on.

Skye had decided while Cyrus was making coffee that it would be better if he stayed home and helped her find the journal especially since he seemed to want to know much more about this than she did herself. Skye put her mug down with a dull thunk before she leaned forward and took Savannah’s hands in her own. “No Sweetie, he is not going to school today. I need his help.” Her voice was soft as she spoke to her youngest daughter with a full heart of love and let go of the little girls’ hands only to open her arms, prompting for a hug that Savannah without fail walked right into.

With Sav in her arms and her eyes falling on Kyra, she felt hollowness in her chest just as Savannah let out a sigh that seems too big for her.

“Kyra is grumpy and if Cy isn’t with us then she will just drag me to school the whole way!” She said with a whine. Kyra stopped abruptly and turned to Savannah with a look of contempt on her face. That was all that Skye needed to see. She pulled away from Savannah eyes still on her grumpy daughter, deep within her she knew something was wrong but with everything wrong right now she dismissed the feeling.

“How about this…how about if Cyrus takes you to school, and then he can come home again, would that make you feel better?”

Savanna’s eyes lit up. “YES Mommy!” and she gave her mother a fierce hug before she grabbed her lunch bag and bolted to the front door yelling for Cyrus. Kyra had her back to Skye as she stood and crossed the kitchen. When she put her hand on Kyra’s shoulder she jumped making Skye jump as well. When Kyra turned around her eyes were shiny as she was on the verge of tears. The look in her eyes was asking for help but she wouldn’t ask or couldn’t ask and Skye didn’t know which one. She traced a line down the side of Kyra’s face and held her chin with her fingertips, searching her face for some hint of what could be wrong with her. “You need to speak to me honey…” Skye said “I can’t help you if you don’t tell me what’s wrong.”

Kyra’s eyes were pleading now and her brain was screaming at her mouth to work, for her vocal cords to remember their job as Skye stared into her eyes hoping Kyra would say something to her. Inside her head Kyra was beaten and scared, not only for herself, but for her mother too. No matter what happened she needed to find a way without fear to warn her mother of what was to come.
